January is when temperatures really start to drop, so it’s a good idea to get ready for cold weather. For you, that may mean shopping for winter clothes or stocking up on rock salt, but you should also think about how the cold weather will affect your teeth.
As it turns out, there are quite a few ways that cold weather can put you at risk for oral health problems. Here are some of the most common ones, along with how you can prevent them.
Dry Mouth
When the weather gets colder, the air starts to get drier. In some cases, this can also dry out your mouth. That may not sound like that big of an issue, but it can potentially put you at an increased risk of contracting gum disease.
Saliva serves as the mouth’s natural cleanser; it begins the digestive process by breaking down food and carrying it into the stomach. Without that saliva, the bacteria in your mouth will feast on the food lingering there. That bacteria will grow into plaque formations, which can cause gum disease and tooth decay.
If you want to counter the effects of the dry winter air, you can make it a point to stay hydrated. This will allow your body to produce the saliva that it needs.
Chapped Lips
In a similar vein, dry weather can reduce the amount of moisture going to your lips, which can cause them to chap. Your lips are some of the thinnest skin on your body, making them especially susceptible to the winter air.
If you haven’t already, pick up a lip balm with SPF protection to add a little bit of moisture to your lips.
Cold Sensitivity
This problem isn’t caused by winter weather, but it can be exacerbated by it. Your teeth may seem like solid slabs, but they actually consist of layers. The top layer, your enamel, is the bone-like substance we ordinarily associate with teeth. Just beneath it, however, is a bundle of nerves and soft tissue called dentin.
When enamel gets thin, that dentin can become exposed, causing you to become sensitive to cold temperatures. If you feel the sting when you step outside, ask your dentist to recommend a toothpaste designed specifically for sensitive teeth.
